The Coalition for Natural Resource Education is again offering its popular comprehensive course about our environment.  Below is some information about the course.

WHAT:  A three hour graduate level course offered through Clemson University and listed as:  Understanding and Teaching About the Environment.  This course has previously been approved by the South Carolina Department of Education "...for certificate renewal in the category Specific Content/Methods for individuals certified in Elementary, Middle School Science and Social Studies, Secondary Science and Social Studies areas, Special Education or Agriculture areas.  All other certified personnel may apply this course for renewal in the category Nature of Teaching/Learning."  We expect similar approval for the 2000 course.

WHEN:  July 10-14 and July 17-21, 2000.  The course will begin Monday morning at 10:00 AM and will continue until Friday at 3 PM.  The course will resume at 9:00 AM July 17 and will continue until 3 PM on July 21.  Students may arrive and move into the housing on the Sunday evening before classes begin/resume if they desire.

WHERE:  At Harbison State Forest located on Broad River Road, Columbia, South Carolina.

WHY:  The course is an interactive, interdisciplinary approach to understanding and teaching about the environment.  Teachers will receive technical scientific materials on soil, forest, water, and animal resources.  Emphasis will be on understanding ecological principals, using scientific methods, and thinking through issues.  Teachers will participate in interactive, hands on learning experiences in each area.  In addition, each teacher will work with resource professionals to prepare materials they can use in their teaching area.  The teacher prepared materials will be shared with all teachers attending the workshop.  Attending teachers also will receive instructor prepared teaching materials for each resource area.

HOW:  Registration is simple.  Fill out the registration form (PDF file requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader) and return it to the address on the form.  Enclose a check for $150 made payable to Coalition for Natural Resource Education.  Costs of instructional materials and some meals will be from this registration fee.  Housing is being provided by the SC Forestry Commission at a minimal cost (also included in the registration fee).

**The first 25 registration forms, accompanied by the required $150 check, based on postmarked date, will be accepted for the course.

INSTRUCTORS:  During the two week course you will be meeting resource professionals from Universities, agencies, and the private sector.  Many of these people are regional and national experts.
