Teaching Kids About
The Environment (Teaching KATE)
is an exciting, fun-filled three days of learning that gives students
an opportunity to develop a sense of appreciation for our natural
resources. Give your students this unique experience, one
that will open their eyes to the world around them. Bring
your students together through three days of learning, recreation,
and group activities.
Watch your students learn as they wade in a stream or a lake, get
their hands muddy in the soil, and walk through the forest.
See their excitement as they get close to wild animals that have
been live trapped. Help your students reach their full potential
as they ask and answer questions through hands-on activity.
There are no limits to the amount of learning and fun that can take
place.
Goals of the KATE program...
 |
To put classroom
learning into practical application. |
 |
To comprehensively
teach natural resource subjects by using the out-of-doors as
a living laboratory for learning |
 |
To give children
an opportunity to develop a sense of responsibility, appreciation,
and stewardship towards natural resources. |
 |
To develop in
children a sense of community, belonging, and cooperation with
each other. |
The Teaching KATE curriculum was developed by the Coalition
for Natural Resource Education, a group of public and private
agencies. The program is available through a partnership with
the South Carolina 4-H Centers, and is held at the R.M. Cooper and
the W.W. Long 4-H Leadership Centers.

Elective Opportunities
Other educational opportunities supplement the basic curriculum,
and allow students to learn about natural resources, themselves,
and each other.
Teams Course. Watch your students help each other
through a series of seemingly impossible activities as they use
their imagination and teamwork to successfully meet these challenges.
Evening Activities. Have your students ever walked
along a forest trail without a flashlight? Have they experienced
the food chain from the perspective of a cotton mouse or a bobcat?
Electives are available that teach your students through informal
activities.
Recreation. Students can play various sports during
free time or organized recreation times. Campfire programs
and a social give them a chance to gather with friends in an informal
setting. Special programming may be available but should be
requested in advance.
Teaching sites
Teaching KATE is available at two sites - the W. W. Long 4-H Leadership
Center in Aiken, SC and the R.M. Cooper 4-H Leadership Center in
Summerton, SC.
