The Coalition for Natural Resource Education

Purpose

To develop and implement natural resource education programs and to develop and build broad based support to provide the opportunity for South Carolina youth to form a commitment towards the wise and sustainable use of natural resources for this and future generations.

Programs

Teaching Kids About The Environment (Teaching KATE). Over 50,000 attendees at two present teaching sites since inception.

Curricula - 5th through 8th Grade. Original curriculum. 3-day, 2-night experience developed in 1992 and revised in 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2003.

7th and 8th Grade (for returning or higher level students). 3-day, 2-night experience developed in 1994 and revised in 1997.

3rd and 4th Grade. A program teachers can use in their local area.

Birding. 5th through 8th Grade. 3-day, 2-night experience developed in 1998 and piloted in spring of 1999.

Summer Graduate Course to teach teachers how to teach kids about the environment. A two week, 3 credit hour course (ED 634) through the Clemson University Graduate School has been offered in four previous summers with a total of approximately 90 students.

Lesson Plans developed by teachers attending ED634 have been compiled and published.

Various supplementary curriculum available to South Carolina teachers - Action for a Cleaner Tomorrow, Teaching KATE, Project Learning Tree, Project Aquatic Wild, Project Wet, and Project Wild - are correlated with the SC Science Standards by grade level.
